The course is aimed at personnel actively involved in gamma spectrometry. It would be
suitable for new users and for those with some experience but little knowledge of the
theoretical concepts behind the technique.
The course is programmed as an introduction to the Two Day Practical Course but stands
equally well on its own. After an introduction to gamma-ray spectrometry participants
will learn about the origins of gamma radiation (important for an understanding of the
relevant nuclear data), take a brief look at the spectrum acquisition hardware and consider
the calibration of the system. Finally, the often ignored problem of coincidence summing
and the current confusion over decision limits are discussed.
The duration of the course is one intensive day. Each participant will be provided with a
set of course notes and, on completion, a Certificate of Attendance for their training record.
The lecture programme covers:

The course is aimed at personnel actively involved in gamma spectrometry.
There will be much emphasis on practical solutions to problems. The course is designed as
a follow-up to the One Day Introductory Gamma-Spectrometry Course but would suit those with
some experience but little knowledge of the theoretical concepts behind the technique.
However, new users would still gain much from the practical exercises.
The duration of the course is two days. Each participant will be provided with a set of course
notes, including work sheets for the practical exercises, and, on completion, a Certificate
of Attendance for their training record.
The course comprises lectures and a number of practical exercises using pre-recorded spectra. It is expected that practical work will fill 50% of the time available. The lecture programme covers:
Practical exercises, for which each participant will have sole use of a suitable computer and software, will familiarise participants with:

The Gamma Spectrometry Update Courses will run from time to time to address some of the issues
raised on our other courses which, due to pressure of time, are not treated as fully as they
might. They are, therefore, aimed at those who have already received basic gamma-ray
spectrometry training.
The Courses will run over two days with accommodation and all meals, including a conference
dinner, accounted for within the course fee. The venue will be the Company Plus Conference
Centre at Fearhead, Warrington, easily accessible from the rail and motorway networks.
For this course external speakers with specialist knowledge will be engaged to present a wider
perspective on gamma-ray spectrometry. As on all Nuclear Training Services Ltd. courses each participant will be
provided with a full set of notes and Certificate of Attendance.
The programme for Update Courses will vary from year to year but are likely to include detailed
examination of the following subjects:
We would welcome suggestions from the gamma spectrometry community for topics to be included in future Update Courses.
To ensure that you receive advance notice of the next Update Course contact Nuclear Training Services Ltd. and ask to be put onto the mailing list.
